The Chung Wah Kung Fu International System is the culmination of Sifu Lee Chi Wai’s lifetime experience in traditional Chinese martial arts and traditional Chinese medicine. The system itself is not a style of kung fu per se, but a modern way of approaching classical martial arts training so that the multitudes of concepts represented through various styles are easier to grasp and understood.
“The human body is limited by structure and physiology – there are only so many ways we can move. Skill in any martial art depends on thorough study and mastery of basic principles and skills. By understanding and developing a strong and highly coordinated body, we can move freely in the style or method that best suits our needs or interests.
Our foundation training, with curriculum derived from both Northern and Southern styles of Kung Fu, is largely based upon Chinese Five-Element theory. According to this, every human motion corresponds to one of five fundamental types of movement, directions, forces, balance points, and so on. By applying these principles, we develop sound body mechanics, balance, coordination, and power generation capability.”
Although the primary intent of martial arts practice is for strengthening the body and self-defense, it is our philosophy that the practice shouldn’t limit itself to just that. Rather the lessons garnered from training should have a positive effect on all areas of our lives – health, relationships, work, etc. Therefore, in addition to traditional martial arts training – health maintenance, culture, sport/performance and personal development are other areas touched upon to help all students understand the greater scope of complete martial arts training – KUNG FU.
Often, I’ve heard people remark that it’s impossible for one person to learn and master as many styles offered under the Chung Wah Kung Fu International System. Several idioms and parables come to mind but one that stands out is “The Blind men and an Elephant” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant). One cannot understand the Chung Wah System based on the same preconceived notion of how martial arts have been passed down for hundreds of years – we simply do not fit that modality of teaching.
“Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.”
